Cement market in Syria

Until 2009, seven public companies were the only producers of cement in Syria. In 2003, the government started efforts to reform the cement industry, mainly focusing on improving existing public plant capacities and environmental practices and opening the door for private sector green field cement projects.

The Syrian cement industry is making remarkable progress in achieving the following objectives:

• Meeting the shortage in cement supply
• Improving cement product quality
• Inviting strategic players with the latest technologies, enhanced environmental protection and a strong capacity for training the industry workforce
• Creating opportunities to become a cement exporter with foreign currency benefits
